A 19-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with obstruction after being hit in the face by an NYPD investigator.
At her arraignment on Wednesday evening in Manhattan Criminal court, Tamani Crum was dressed in a mask, a white shirt, and a grey cardigan.
It occurs at the same time as civil rights crusader Al Sharpton vowed to sue the police over the Tuesday incident in Harlem.
The Detectives’ Endowment Association, however, rejected the action and said that it was considering bringing a legal lawsuit against the suspect.
Video captures Detective Kendo Kinsey striking Crum to the ground after she interfered with cops’ attempts to apprehend Elvin James, 22, at the time.
The shocking encounter at 5 p.m. on Tuesday is captured on tape with the officer approaching her and slapping her.
Activists and her family were outraged by the occurrence and criticised the cop for touching the victim.
The NYPD soon put an end to them, however, and stood by the cop, claiming James had a pistol and that the officer’s efforts to halt the arrest may have been fatal.
Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, stated: “Criminals in NY have gotten used to the fact that there are no repercussions for their risky, unlawful actions, but there are repercussions when you assault a New York City Detective in order to obstruct an arrest of a man carrying a gun.”
We implore legislators to open their eyes and see the public safety catastrophe they have wrought while the DEA investigates the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit on behalf of our committed member against the lady who assaulted him.
In addition, he attacked civil rights leader Al Sharpton, claiming that rather than worrying about fame and money, he should be concerned about the thousands of true crime victims in this city.
DiGiacomo said, “They (Sharpton) stated they’re going to file a civil claim.” DailyMail.com. The lady will also be the target of a legal lawsuit that we plan to launch.
“This individual (James) was in possession of a loaded, illegal firearm, and her interference in that arrest could have cost the police officers as well as other innocent people their lives because they had to divert their attention away from the armed suspect to her,” he claimed, defending the detective’s actions against a woman who was obviously resisting arrest.
The video captured a tumultuous scenario as an army of police officers engaged a crowd of individuals outside of an apartment building on W136 Street in Harlem.
As James was being held by the police and a fight broke out between them, spectators could be heard roaring loudly.
Then, a little lady in a skirt—Crum—ran into the commotion and started talking to James.
She then got into a fight with Officer Kinsey when he attempted to get her out of the throng by jabbing his arm at her head.
But when she slapped at Kinsey’s arm, he hit her in the face with such force that she fell off her feet and sprawled on the pavement on her back.
Uncertain whether she had banged her head on the concrete, she was nonetheless seen gripping her face with both hands and seemed confused as the audience yelled.
