Anthony Lamb, a forward for the Golden State Warriors, is accused of raping a fellow student-athlete at the University of Vermont in 2019.
The charges were made by Kendall Ware, a former UVM Division I swimmer, in a civil suit filed against the institution on Tuesday. She asserts in her complaint that the school mishandled and acted with “deliberate apathy” toward “student-on-student harassment and sexual assault.”
Ware claims in the lawsuit that Lamb raped her at an off-campus party held at Lamb’s residence on September 7, 2019, six months after their six-month romance ended. She claims the assault occurred in Lamb’s bedroom after an encounter in the driveway, during which Lamb was screaming and taunting her.
Lamb was a junior at the time, and Ware was 19 years old.
According to the lawsuit, Ware reported the alleged assault along with two others involving Lamb to the school’s Title IX Office the following month. A number of UVM workers, including athletic director Jeff Schultz, allegedly dissuaded her from requesting an official investigation.
Ware had already mentioned her attack with the Burlington Free Press, alleging she was raped in 2019 by a men’s basketball player and that the institution failed her in the Title IX procedure.
Ware was unable to identify an attacker at the time.
Anthony Lamb (3) of the Vermont Catamounts brings the ball upcourt against the Cincinnati Bearcats on December 3, 2019 at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lamb, who played for Vermont from 2016 to 2020 before being undrafted, is not a defendant in the action filed in Burlington’s U.S. District Court.
“The claims made against me in 2019 that have resurfaced are absolutely false,” Lamb said via the Warriors. “I have always been very forthcoming in regards to the alleged incident, and I welcome any investigation into the topic. Simply told, I have never been a sexual offender.”
During their time as UVM students, Ware and two other women allege they were sexually assaulted in two different occasions (not including Lamb). The claimants seek undisclosed compensation. The three women assert that the institution “ignored known and evident conditions that greatly elevated Plaintiffs’ risk of sexual assault on campus by fellow students.”
In a civil claim filed against the University of Vermont by three former students, Golden State Warriors forward Anthony Lamb has been accused of rape.
Anthony is not a defendant in this new action, and to our knowledge, he has never been accused of misconduct in any legal proceeding, the Warriors said in a statement to SF Gate. Before signing Anthony in September, as we do with all players, we completed our research on the NBA and his previous organizations. We will analyze any new information that becomes available and act accordingly.”
After the organization signed Lamb to a two-way contract on October 16, Warriors general manager Bob Myers addressed the allegations in a press conference.
Myers stated at the time, “We checked with the NBA and the two teams that had previously signed him and did not hear of any official charges or anything like that.” It is difficult since we take this matter very seriously.
In a response to “Seven Days” on Wednesday, a UVM representative stated university administrators “were sorry to learn of the particular circumstances each of these plaintiffs recounted, and we want all survivors to know they are heard, supported, and valued.
“We stand by our robust procedures and regulations, as well as the assistance provided by the committed employees who undertake this work with the utmost professionalism, integrity, and care. Even though an independent review last year found that UVM met or exceeded all benchmarks around sexual misconduct response, we have implemented numerous changes to our protocols.”
Prior to joining the Warriors in August, Lamb played for the Rockets, Spurs, and many G League clubs.
