On Sunday, at least ten people were buried in an avalanche at a ski resort in western Austria; one person was rescued.
The pile of snow, ice, and boulders began to fall in the Lech/Zuers free skiing area at 3 p.m. on Christmas Day, according to the Austrian Press Agency (APA).
Approximately 100 individuals were involved in the immediate search, which included the deployment of multiple aircraft and search teams.
Ten winter sports enthusiasts were buried, according to a police statement.
APA stated that those involved in the search sought headlamps so they could continue their rescue operation into the night.
The municipality of Lech was quoted by APA as saying, “We are doing everything we can to save winter sports enthusiasts.” “Searchlights were ordered in order to continue the search in the dark.”
Lech/Zuers is a well-known ski region in the Alps and is part of the birthplace of Alpine skiing. According to the resort’s website, the skiing area has been closed due to the emergency as of 5:00 p.m. Sunday
At 8:00 a.m. on Monday, an update will be issued on whether the resort will reopen for skiing.
