A 29-year-old woman from Coffs Harbour, NSW, has become the first in Australia to receive a uterus transplant from her mother and hopes to carry her second child in the same womb she was grown in.
Kirsty Bryant lost her uterus in an emergency hysterectomy following the birth of her first child in 2021 due to a haemorrhage. The successful surgery was carried out on January 10 at Sydney’s Royal Hospital for Women, with Kirsty’s mother Michelle Hayton donating the uterus.
The surgeries, overseen by Professor Mats Brännström, will continue throughout 2023, with six donated uteruses from live donors and six from deceased donors.
The procedure is unique as it’s a temporary transplant that typically lasts around five years to allow the woman to have children.
