BBC North West Tonight mistakenly interviewed a superfan dressed similarly to Käärijä, Finland’s entry to this year’s Eurovision, during their segment covering the semi-final performances.
The reporter spoke to the man, dressed in a luminous green top worn by Käärijä onstage, thinking he was the artist.
The man praised Liverpool as the host city, describing it as better organised than other cities he had visited.
Viewers of the show took to social media to point out that the interviewee was not Käärijä, but instead a fan.
Mistaken Identity on BBC North West Tonight
BBC North West Tonight’s segment covering the Eurovision semi-final performances took an unexpected turn when a superfan was mistakenly interviewed instead of Finland’s entry, Käärijä.
The interviewee was dressed similarly to the artist, wearing a luminous green top like the one worn by Käärijä on stage.
The reporter introduced the man as “the main man himself” before asking him about Liverpool as a host city.
The blunder was aired as part of a segment interviewing fans on the semi-final performances, several of whom tipped Finland to go the distance in the competition.
Social Media Users Point Out the Mistake
Viewers of BBC North West Tonight’s Eurovision coverage took to social media to point out the mistake, as the interviewee was not Käärijä but a superfan.
TV critic and broadcaster Scott Bryan tweeted about the situation, describing it as “absolutely sensational”.
Other Twitter users expressed their amusement, with one writing that the BBC had interviewed a Käärijä fan thinking it was the artist, while another expressed disbelief that the reporter had made such an error.
