In its supposed “peace proposal” for Russia’s war on Ukraine, Beijing has dropped a pack of self-serving bulls. This proposal blatantly ignores the fact that Russia is China’s “unshakable” ally, as declared by Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin in their meeting last February, where Xi approved of Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine as long as it was after the Beijing Olympics that same month.
The war has gone far worse than Putin anticipated, but that does not affect Xi, as China has greatly benefited from being Russia’s buyer of last resort over the past year.
Beijing only seeks to bolster its world power, and Xi’s only goal is to do just that.
It is easy for China to call for a ceasefire, and Putin may even agree if his current all-out offensive fails and he fears Ukraine’s coming counter.
Then they can both blame Kyiv. However, Beijing’s “plan” is incredibly cynical, with its stated “principles” mostly consisting of a long list of things that Russia has violated, including “Respecting the sovereignty of all countries” (which Russia did not do by invading) and “Protecting civilians and prisoners of war” (which Moscow has targeted from the start).
China expressed its opposition to nuclear weapons, but Putin constantly threatens to use them without any protest from Beijing. Beijing’s call to abandon the Cold War mentality is laughable, as the West has already done so, and even let China into the world economy as a Most Favored Nation and member of every global economic institution.
However, both China and Russia have been building up their militaries for decades, even as the West has cut back. Putin has launched multiple invasions of his neighbours, while Xi has only bullied him so far.
The fact is that China is the only power outside Russia that could end the war now if Xi told Putin that he was cutting him off.
However, Beijing merely abstained from this week’s UN General Assembly vote calling Russia to withdraw. It seems that Xi Jinping doesn’t particularly want peace in Ukraine; he wants to help the world’s fools believe that he is a good guy.
