Bob Odenkirk, known for his roles in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is moving away from the world of crime and legal betrayals to star in a new AMC series, Lucky Hank.
Set in the world of academia, the show follows William “Hank” Devereaux, Jr., a tenured professor and head of the English department.
The show is based on Richard Russo’s novel Straight Man, and Odenkirk is excited to play a character that is closer to his own age and is part of a loving, middle-aged married couple.
The show explores the world of academia and the intense “camaraderie and rivalry” between highly driven characters who are hellbent on proving their worth.
Because the protagonist, Hank, is a tenured professor who cannot be fired, there is a push and pull between these characters and the small, borderline insignificant ways they’re competing to prove their worth.
Odenkirk explained that the characters in the show are all clever and good with language, making it a fun scenario.
Odenkirk is excited about the challenge of Lucky Hank, which he sees as a 50/50 comedy-drama, a difficult balance to achieve.
He likes to take on the hardest challenges and push himself to do the most impossible version of a project.
The show also features an ensemble cast, and Odenkirk praises his co-stars for their talent and comedic timing.
The show premieres on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, March 19 at 9/8c p.m.
