Bryan Kohberger’s legal team challenge 30 news organizations

Bryan Kohberger’s legal team is seeking to maintain a gag order that has been placed on the case by challenging 30 news organizations in front of the Idaho Supreme Court.

They claim that the media’s coverage of the case has been “twisted” and are accusing them of seeking a “procedural victory” instead of asking the magistrate judge who initially issued the order to reverse it. However, Jay Weston Logsdon, with the Kootenai County Public Defender’s office, did not provide any examples of the alleged “twisted” media coverage.

Bryan Kohberger, a criminal justice doctoral student, has been charged with the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle. The bodies of the students were found on November 13, 2022, in an off-campus apartment. Kohberger’s legal team has yet to reveal if they intend to seek the death penalty.

In January, Latah County Magistrate Judge Megan Marshall issued a gag order that prevented attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and others associated with the case from speaking or writing about it. The coalition of news organizations, which includes The Associated Press, argues that the gag order violates their right to free speech.
