A man from Canada is being held in connection with the death of a 23-year-old woman from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, who was found dead on Friday at a hotel south of Cancun, Mexico.
The victim’s family later confirmed her identity as Kiara Agnew. Mexican prosecutors said the death occurred in the Mayan Riviera, but no other details were disclosed.
A tweet from a Mexican police force stated that a foreign national is being investigated for the crime of femicide. Agnew was in Mexico with her boyfriend at the time of her death.
She worked at Lake View Credit Union, which expressed condolences for the loss of their teammate and friend. The victim’s family started a fundraiser to bring her body back to Canada.
Agnew’s aunt, Katlyn Levesque, said that her niece had always loved to travel and was vibrant, courageous and driven. She last spoke to her niece on Thursday and called her death “beyond tragic for every single person involved.”
Global Affairs Canada said that consular officials are providing assistance to the families and are in contact with local authorities but cannot disclose further information due to privacy considerations.
