The Carnival City hotel in Gauteng’s East Rand has been safely evacuated after a fire broke out Saturday afternoon.
The Carnival City Casino and Entertainment World is where the hotel is located.
Videos circulating on social media showed people fleeing for their life from an entertainment complex that included a casino and restaurants, among other things.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson, William Ntladi said exactly at 18H40 on Saturday it was reported that the Carnival City hotel was on fire.
Brakpan and Benoni central fire stations backed by Tsakane fire station, all responded swiftly to the scene.
“On arrival, offensive fire suppression was conducted and flames knocked down. Damping down was conducted and the scene declared safe.
On investigation, it was found that fiberglass material from outside the entrance atrium caught alight suspected to have been caused by electrical short circuit.
Firefighters responded with a fleet of four fire engines and 24 personnel.
No casualties recorded on scene. Further investigation to be conducted by fire safety officers together with Carnival City’s safety officials.”
