On Saturday, Al Ahly defeated Monterrey of Mexico in what was effectively a quarter-final match at the FIFA Club World Cup in the UAE.
Mohamed Hany’s 53rd-minute goal gave Al Ahly a 1-0 victory.
Due to their participation with the Egyptian national team ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final versus Senegal in Cameroon, the Egyptian giants were without a number of first-choice players.
However, there was some good news ahead of kick-off for the Cairo side when coach Pitso Mosimane tested negative for Covid-19 and took his place in the dugout for the match.
Al Ahly will face Brazilian side in the semi-finals
South Africa’s Percy Tau took no part in the match as he struggles to overcome an injury.
Al Ahly will now face Brazilian side Palmeiras in the semi-finals, while in the other semi-final Chelsea await the winner of the Al Hilal v Al Jazira clash.
