Conservative Senedd Member Natasha Asghar, representing South Wales East, recently declared her intention to become the Tory candidate in the race for the Mayor of London.
In an email to fellow Tory Senedd Members, she clarified that she would not be resigning from her current position to focus on her campaign.
Criticism of Welsh Government during Plenary
During a Plenary session in the Welsh Parliament, Natasha Asghar confronted First Minister Mark Drakeford regarding the affordability of school uniforms in Wales.
She accused the Welsh Government of procrastination, stating they were “kicking the can down the road.”
In response, the First Minister refuted the accusation, highlighting that guidance on the matter had already been issued, emphasizing its strength compared to other regions such as London.
Mixed Reactions and Welsh Tory Leader’s Response
The First Minister’s response sparked amusement and laughter from the Labour side of the Welsh Parliament, with some Tory Members also joining in.
However, Welsh Tory leader Andrew RT Davies remained unresponsive and seemingly unimpressed throughout the exchange.
Natasha Asghar’s Justification for not Resigning and Commitment to Wales
When approached by WalesOnline regarding her decision not to resign, Natasha Asghar defended her choice.
She explained that she had only submitted an application form and compared it to applying for another job in any other area of society, where resignation would not be expected.
She assured that she would continue serving the people of South East Wales diligently.
She expressed gratitude to her colleagues in the Welsh Parliament for their support and willingness to address any legitimate questions they may have.
London Experience and Motivation for Candidacy
Natasha Asghar emphasized her nearly two-decade-long residency in London and her understanding of the significant issues faced by its residents.
Drawing from her professional background in media and banking, she believed she possessed the necessary experience to bring about meaningful change in the city.
Criticizing the current Mayor, Sadiq Khan, for neglecting London, she expressed her determination to instigate positive transformations.
Additionally, she highlighted her track record of holding the Welsh Government accountable, particularly in the area of transport, and expressed her intention to bring her political experience, knowledge, passion, and determination to the mayoral candidacy.
