The FBI has announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to the location of an American woman, María del Carmen López, who was kidnapped in the Colima state of western Mexico.
The 63-year-old has been missing since February 9, when she was forcibly taken from her home in the Pueblo Nuevo municipality, according to the FBI’s Los Angeles field office.
María’s daughter, Zonia López, reported that witnesses saw her mother being abducted by several individuals wearing hoods.
The kidnappers exchanged a few words with María before she pleaded that she would not go with them.
The captors later sent a video showing the missing woman begging her loved ones to pay a ransom for her release.
The demanded ransom amount remains unconfirmed.
Zonia López shared a poster on Facebook containing images of her mother and urged the public to help authorities locate her.
María, who was born in Mexico, frequently traveled between Los Angeles and Colima. Her husband was in Los Angeles for a doctor’s appointment when the kidnapping occurred.
Zonia pleaded, “We need our mother back! We need your help!”
This news comes as the U.S. State Department warns Americans against traveling to Mexico for spring break.
They advised increased caution in popular spring break locations, particularly after dark, and highlighted concerns about the use of synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills.
Several other cases of American kidnappings in Mexico have been reported recently, some resulting in rescues and others in fatalities.
