As we approach the holiday season, more and more activities are occurring.
One such offering is the “Stay At Home Comic” performance by comedian Dalin Oliver at the Theatre On The Square till October 1.
This production is also the recipient of the 2022 Standard Bank Ovation Award, which makes Oliver especially happier to be touring the one-hour performance.
This hilarious show, written, performed, and produced by the radio and television star, is fresh from the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
There will be a riot, but don’t worry, it’s the legal sort, and the only looting will be Oliver’s jokes, which you can share with your friends at the next braai.
IOL Entertainment interviewed the Cape Town-based comedian during his performance in Johannesburg.
Oliver says, “So, gather your WhatsApp groups and come have a good time with Mzansi’s favorite comedian, who resembles the Vin Diesel you ordered from ‘Wish’.
He sees the show as a tale about adjusting to new circumstances and making “major decisions in the future.”
“I’m thrilled to return to Johannesburg, I adore performing here. The city and its inhabitants have always been quite kind to me.
“I have many great memories on and off the stage. Capetonians that have relocated to Johannesburg, coupled with Johannesburg natives, is always the greatest.
“When I was just starting out in comedy, I would visit close friends and sleep on their couches and mattresses in order to save money while playing here. Thankfully, I no longer have to couch surf, but the trip has been one of which I am really proud.
“The intention of the show is to make it accessible to people of all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. In this program, I explore my identity through discussing life space, difficult living situations, etc.
“This is also a good way of saying that I want to explore different environments and travel more internationally beginning next year. This must be done with my material and writing in order for my humor to be global.”

Oliver was a teacher before he became a comedian, so he has something to fall back on if his jokes get rusty in the future.
Oliver’s stand-up routine ensures that the audience will have a relatable experience.
“It’s really a therapy session in which I vent about my neighbors. It’s my favorite accounts of their experiences and encounters. Although their adult tennis sounds are louder than Notorious B.I.G. at full volume, one of my neighbors routinely complains about the volume of my music.
“Occasionally, they even sing along with the music I’m playing. Isn’t it such a double standard? Then, the cat of my other neighbor chose to make my flat his second home, where he resides rent-free. I don’t mind; he’s a cool cat.
“I have not yet accepted it formally, but this is South Africa, where everything is possible.
“I can usually locate a connection through a family member who knows someone at cat home affairs who will sign the paperwork making me the legal owner.” There is so much going on here.”
“I feel like I’m living in a soap opera since my neighbors have exposed me to so much. It is more dramatic than when Marlena was possessed on “Days of Our Lives” in my generation.
“The TikTok users have no idea who Marlena and Stefano DiMera are/were,” he laughed.
He concluded, “What I’m trying to say is, if you want to learn more about my neighbors and all of their antics, come to my show.”
