As the summer continues in the Western Cape, dam levels continue to drop, prompting urgent calls for residents to conserve water.
Cumulatively, the six biggest dams in the province – the Berg River, Steenbras Lower, Steenberg Upper, Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei, and Wemmershoek – are much lower than they were during the same time period last year.
The City of Cape Town posted its most recent statistics on January 23.
The most recent statistics indicate that the six dams account for 63.7% of total storage.
This is down from 65.5% the week prior.
Worryingly, the combined percentage stood at 88.8% a year earlier.
Theewaterskloof, which accounts for more than half of the province’s entire dam capacity (480 188 MI of a total of 898 221 MI), is at 60.2% of capacity, while Volvlei is at 49.9%.
The citizens of the Western Cape do not require a reminder of life during the “Day Zero” water crisis from mid-2017 to mid-2018.
