A black man who passed while in police custody more than two years ago will get $12 million from the City of Rochester, according to the agreement.
On March 23, 2020, while in police custody, Daniel Prude, 41, asphyxiated to death after being placed on the ground and covered with a hood.
The guy passed out while being restrained, and a week later he passed away in the hospital.
Prude’s death was first attributed to a narcotics overdose by Rochester Police in Rochester, New York, and it mostly remained unreported.
However, nightly demonstrations started once body camera footage was made public over six months later as a result of pressure from Prude’s family.
After more than two years of litigation, the City of Rochester and the estate of Daniel Prude have reached a settlement agreement, according to today’s announcement from Mayor Malik Evans.
“The City shall pay the estate the amount of $12,000,000 under this Agreement.”
“This settlement was the wisest course of action given the expense of further litigation.”
Legal action would have been more expensive for the taxpayers and more hurtful for our community.
It is time to look forward so that we can collaborate and concentrate our efforts on Rochester’s future.
On September 4, 2022, video of Prude’s arrest surfaced. It showed the cops arresting Prude for running naked through the streets covering his head with a mesh bag to prevent him from spitting.
Prude had been assessed for strange conduct in a hospital the day before, but he wasn’t hospitalized. After Prude fled the home, his family phoned the police out of worry for his safety.
While another police applied a knee to Prude’s back, one cop forced Prude’s face on the ground. He was kept down by the cops for around two minutes until he passed out. A week later, he was taken off of life support.
After Prude’s death was made public, officers Troy Taladay, Paul Ricotta, Francisco Santiago, Andrew Specksgoor, Josiah Harris, and Mark Vaughn were suspended along with Sgt. Michael Magri.
