Daniel Stilitz KC, a barrister who advised Sue Gray on her Partygate probe, has been found to have posted critical comments about the Conservative party and Prime Minister Boris Johnson online.
Stiglitz was a Labour member until 2019 and had urged others to join the party in tweets that were uncovered, leading him to delete his Twitter account.
The barrister also commented on Brexit, stating that Labour MPs backing a Brexit deal were ‘mugs’.
Stilitz’s political views led some Tories to question his appointment as an advisor to Gray, particularly given the investigation’s sensitivity. However, the Cabinet Office defended the decision, citing Stilitz’s adherence to the code of conduct that requires barristers to act in the best interests of their clients.
Stilitz, educated at William Ellis School in Hampstead and graduated from New College, Oxford, has a successful legal career and has represented government departments, Goldman Sachs, and football manager Jose Mourinho.
He was called to the Bar in 1992 and became a silk in 2010. Stiglitz has two sons and a daughter from his first marriage and remarried in 2019.
Despite Stilitz’s past political affiliations, the Cabinet Office maintains that he provided independent advice to Gray and acted in the best interests of the investigation.
