In December 2022, a shocking incident took place in Hoglands Park, Southampton, Hampshire, where an Iraqi immigrant stabbed an 18-year-old university student, Ellis Wheeler.
The 28-year-old attacker, Rebaz Mohammed, wanted to be deported from Britain and therefore carried out the savage attack.
The victim, who was returning from the gym, was left fighting for his life with a punctured lung.
Terrifying footage captured the incident where Mohammed pulled out a kitchen knife from his coat and lunged at the teenager’s back.
Before the attack, he approached the student and briefly spoke to him, asking if he knew kickboxing.
Mr Wheeler managed to run away but passed out before being taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The police arrested Mohammed at the scene, and he admitted to attacking his victim so he could be sent back to Iraq.
He appeared in court and pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife blade.
The court heard that Mohammed knew he had to commit a serious offence to be deported and had spoken to people who knew the immigration system.
Mohammed, who had previously served a prison term and had been cautioned for criminal damage and battery, was sentenced to six years imprisonment with a four-year extended licence.
The judge berated him for inflicting the horrific injuries to ‘achieve his own end’ and said that the attack could have killed the victim.
The court also heard how the victim, a first-year Solent University student, missed his exams and still struggles to sleep due to anxiety.
However, he was fortunate to have a ‘heroic’ friend who called 999 and put pressure on his wound until the police arrived.
The judge commended the friend for possibly saving the victim’s life and awarded him £250.
