Iowa deputy Brandon Bjoin was hit by a vehicle while assisting a stranded driver on a snowy highway on Saturday, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
While Bjoin was helping the driver who had gotten stuck on the median of Interstate 80, another accident occurred behind him. A black suburban then struck Bjoin, sideswiping him and hitting his right arm, which forced him to the ground.
Bjoin’s body camera recorded the moment he was hit by the vehicle. The video shows Bjoin talking to the stranded driver on the side of the road before being hit by the car from his right side and knocked to the ground.
Bjoin was taken by Dallas County EMS to Methodist Hospital in downtown Des Moines, where he was treated for bruising to his arm before being released.
The stranded driver, who was not hit, asked if Bjoin was okay as he stood over him before the video ended.
The sheriff’s office said in a statement that Bjoin was lucky to have only suffered minor injuries and that the incident should serve as a reminder to all motorists to slow down when they see flashing lights and use caution while driving in winter weather.
