The baseball world is still processing Edwin Diaz’s untimely season-ending injury.
The electrifying closer recently posted a message thanking Mets fans for their support.
It was revealed on Thursday that the Mets reliever tore his patellar tendon while celebrating Puerto Rico’s 5-2 upset win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.
Diaz saved the game and helped his team reach the quarterfinals.
On his official Twitter account, @SugarDiaz39, Diaz made his first public statement since receiving the unfortunate news.
He thanked his beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, for their support with messages and prayers. He expressed his gratitude and stated that he is doing well and healing.
Diaz mentioned that he can’t wait to see his fans in NY again and play those trumpets.
The injury is expected to sideline Diaz for about eight months, likely keeping him out for the rest of the season.
Several teammates have spoken about Diaz glowingly after his injury, including Met and Team Puerto Rico teammate Francisco Lindor, who captains the WBC ballclub.
He empathized with Mets fans and thanked them for being concerned about Edwin’s well-being.
Lindor also stated that playing in the WBC means just as much to all of them.
He acknowledged that injuries are part of the game, but they do not want them to happen.
The Mets will have to proceed without Diaz, who is in the first year of a new five-year, $102 extension this season.
They should be equipped to patch up the massive void left by Diaz’s absence.
