Experts warn that King Charles’ plan to have a smaller and cheaper monarchy could result in the Royal Family’s day-to-day responsibilities being impossible to fulfil.

A new portrait released on Monday to celebrate the King’s Coronation provided a glimpse into the future of the Royal Family, with Queen Camilla and the Princess Royal stood either side of Charles.

There are concerns that there may be too much pressure on Prince Charles and Princess Anne to take on most of the engagements as the pool of working royals continues to shrink, with Prince Andrew and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex having stepped back from public duties.

Royal author Phil Dampier said there is a shortage of working royals for at least the next decade, leaving them unable to fulfil daily duties.

He also stated that the idea of long-distance overseas royal tours may not be welcomed by Queen Camilla.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams noted the “challenge” for the King in the future and said he will need to decide “how slimmed down he wants the monarchy to be”.

King Charles is known to be in favour of a smaller and cheaper monarchy, but this could result in significant challenges.

There are already concerns about a shortage of working royals for at least the next decade, which will leave Prince Charles and Princess Anne with most of the engagements.

The idea of long-distance overseas royal tours may also be problematic.

The King and Queen have expressed their gratitude for the nation’s support throughout the historic celebrations, with King Charles stating that the outpouring of celebration for his Coronation is “the greatest possible gift”.

The official portraits show King Charles III and Queen Camilla in all their majesty in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace, surrounded by their fellow ‘working royals’.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with Prince Andrew, were nowhere to be seen.

Overall, the Royal Family faces significant challenges ahead, and Prince Charles will need to carefully consider how slimmed down he wants the monarchy to be in the future.
