Former town councillor shocked to receive a letter stating that he was dead

Former town councillor Mark Cusack was surprised to receive a letter from the government informing him that he was dead, leaving him with no National Insurance number and unable to pay his council tax bill.

The 48-year-old resident of Hungerford, Berkshire, even had to get a note from his doctor to prove he was still alive. He reported the matter to Action Fraud, having had a previous issue with identity theft.

Though he found the situation amusing, he said it could have serious consequences for someone who is vulnerable or has health issues. He warns that reversing the error is not as simple as making a phone call or writing a letter.

Mr. Cusack consulted his GP, who provided a note stating that he was alive.
