Fran Fraschilla, a college basketball and NBA draft analyst for ESPN believes that St. John’s needs to hire a coach with high energy, someone who is willing to grind away tirelessly to bring the school back to national relevance.
Fraschilla suggests that St. John’s should consider hiring a younger coach who is on his way up, someone who possesses incredible energy and will not take no for an answer.
Fraschilla is not advocating for the removal of current coach Mike Anderson, but if St. John’s decides to make a change, he recommends that they follow Providence’s example in hiring Ed Cooley in 2011.
Under Cooley’s leadership, Providence has reached the NCAA Tournament six times since 2014 and is projected to be an at-large team this year, after advancing to the Sweet 16 last March.
Fraschilla believes that St. John’s needs to make a change in its approach to basketball on a grand scale. He notes that there needs to be a commitment to incredible facilities, which has been lacking in the past.
Fraschilla believes that basketball should be the front porch of the university, the part that people see first, and that there has to be a commitment to leadership in this area.
Ultimately, Fraschilla believes that St. John’s needs more than just a new coach, but a change in their overall approach to basketball.
He notes that in the past, St. John’s was able to dive into the city’s talent base, but he is not sure if that can still be done today. St. John’s last reached the main draw of the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and has not won an NCAA Tournament game since 2000.
If St. John’s decides to move on from Anderson, they should choose a young, energetic coach like Providence did when they hired Ed Cooley in 2011.
