Celebrating St. Clare of Assisi: A Life of Devotion and Dedication

On August 11, the Catholic Church commemorates the feast of St. Clare of Assisi, a noblewoman who was profoundly influenced by the teachings of St. Francis and chose a life of poverty.

This decision led her to establish the Poor Clares, a contemplative order of religious sisters.

The order rapidly expanded across Italy, with young noblewomen relinquishing their possessions to join the Poor Clares.

Over time, the movement extended beyond Italy’s borders, reaching countries like Spain, Belgium, and France.

A Closer Look at the Poor Clares Order

Within the Poor Clares order, several branches emerged, including the Colettine Poor Clares, Capuchin Poor Clares, and the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration.

These sisters adhere to the Rule of St. Clare, which was endorsed by Pope Innocent IV shortly before her passing in 1253.

Central to their commitment are vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity.

Dedication and Leadership: Mother Marie André Campbell

Mother Marie André Campbell, a member of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, resides at the Our Lady of Solitude Monastery in Tonopah, Arizona.

She has served as an abbess for the monastery since 2016, following her 29 years of dedicated religious life.

Campbell’s childhood in a military family exposed her to various experiences, and after completing her education at the University of California-Santa Barbara, she initially pursued a career in government service.

However, her path took a different turn.

An Unexpected Call to Religious Life

Campbell’s journey towards religious life was punctuated by unexpected turns.

A visit to a monastery founded by Mother Angelica ignited a spark within her.

Despite considering a life as a Dominican sister, the contemplative lifestyle resonated more deeply with her.

Growing up surrounded by Franciscan influences and inspired by the contemplative essence, Campbell entered the Poor Clares in 1994, heeding what she felt was a divine call.

The Essence of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration

The Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration trace their origins to France, established by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854.

Rooted in the spirit of thanksgiving and eucharistic adoration, the order integrates Franciscan living with a profound devotion to the Eucharist.

Mother Marie André Campbell elaborated that their lives are centered around continuous thanksgiving, revolving around the presence of the Lord.

A Life of Adoration and Balance

Adoration forms a cornerstone of the Poor Clares’ faith, with Campbell describing it as second only to Mass.

Their daily schedule encompasses prayer, Mass, meals, work, Holy Hours, and recreation, creating a balanced rhythm.

Campbell expresses curiosity about whether passersby on the nearby highway recognize the spiritual presence dwelling within their monastery.

A Message of Encouragement

Mother Marie André Campbell encourages those seeking solace to set aside time for the Lord.

In challenging times, she believes that spending time in the presence of the Eucharist brings peace and grace.

Campbell’s advice to potential discerners of religious life is rooted in faith and courage.

Embracing the unknown, trusting divine providence, and aligning one’s will with the Lord’s are the cornerstones of her guidance.

St. Clare’s Legacy

St. Clare’s legacy holds particular significance for Campbell.

Just as St. Clare trusted in divine providence, Campbell sees this as a guiding principle for their lives.

Similar to Mother Angelica, who founded the monastery Campbell visited, they embrace uncertainty with trust.

Campbell concludes by emphasizing that with Jesus, there’s nothing to fear.

The Global Reach of the Poor Clares

Today, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration have established 27 monasteries across the globe, spanning countries such as France, Bangladesh, India, Germany, Poland, and more.

Their commitment to adoration, gratitude, and trust continues to impact lives worldwide.
