Geno Smith has agreed to a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks after an impressive 2022 season, during which he seized the starting quarterback job.
The deal, which could be worth up to $105 million, solidifies Smith’s position in Seattle.
Formerly a backup for the Jets and Giants, Smith was able to resurrect his career in Seattle after Russell Wilson was traded to Denver.
Smith threw for a franchise-record of 4,282 yards, and 30 touchdowns, and led the NFL with a 69.8% completion percentage, securing a playoff spot for the Seahawks.
Although they fell to the 49ers in the wild-card round, Smith’s performance was enough to earn him a Pro Bowl-caliber season.
Smith has expressed his desire to finish his career in Seattle, citing his appreciation for the city, team, and organization that embraced him.
He began his NFL career with the Jets in 2013 as a second-round draft pick and seemed poised to take the starting reins until a practice fight left him with a broken jaw.
He eventually took the No. 2 job with the Giants in 2017 before spending a season in the same role with the Chargers.
Smith joined the Seahawks as Wilson’s backup in 2020, and now, three years later, he has earned his payday as Seattle’s starting quarterback.
Despite the bumps in his career, Smith remains humble and grateful for the opportunity to return to NFL stardom.
He believes his tough times have made him stronger and more patient, and he looks forward to continuing his success in Seattle.
