The Principal of Government Senior College, Agege, Mrs. Bolanle Olusola Alamu, has applauded the contributions and developmental efforts of the 1981 set of the school, saying that the old students have been exemplary in their conduct and in executing some capital projects within the school as a way of giving back to their Alma Mater.
Mrs. Alamu spoke at an event held by the old students to celebrate their 40 years post-secondary school anniversary, acknowledging that the donation of a set of computers by the ex-students to the school will go a long way in improving the proficiency of both the students and their teachers in computer usage and make the students compete favourably with their counterparts in other parts of the world.
Outlining some of the accomplishments of the school over the years, the Principal disclosed that the school recorded the best performance in the West Africa Examination Council with 90.4% of students passing the examination and stated that the feat was made possible through the giant strides and investment of the Lagos State Government in quality education. She added that the State Government employed and deployed competent and capable teachers, equipped the school libraries, furnished the school’s computer rooms and also installed necessary laboratory equipment in the school, among several other interventions by the present administration.
The Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Class of 1981 of the School, Mrs. Titilola Atewologun, expressed her gratitude to the school for the impact made in the lives of the students during their school days. Atewologun, represented by one of the old students, Mrs. Ope Balogun, said that the gesture extended to the school through the donation of computers and the building of a toilet by the old students was a way of complementing the efforts of the State Government in raising the bar of excellence in the education sector. Her words: “Today we are here to give a token back to our Alma Mater to appreciate this great institution that nurtured us to where we are today”.
Another old student of the school and a retired Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of The Environment, Mrs. Belinda Aderonke Odeneye, recalled her experience as a student in the school 40 years ago, saying that members of the alumni were able to enjoy several social amenities provided by the school. She affirmed that Government Secondary School, Agege, is one of the best schools in Lagos State in terms of good structures, quality education and high morals among the students.
Odeneye explained that her set chose to renovate and build more toilets for the school to meet the standard required and also to prevent the students from being infected by communicable diseases, stressing that a toilet is one of the basic amenities every school should have and it must remain clean all the time.
She urged the students of the school to study hard, be good ambassadors of the school anywhere they find themselves and be ready to always contribute their quota to the development of the school for posterity sake. An ex-student and Executive Director Champagne Foundation, Mrs. Abimbola Ojosipe, in a presentation titled: “Silence in The Face of Abuse”, charged the students to shun any form of abuse and urged them to speak out if they are being abused.
According to her, bullying and sexual harassment are predominant forms of abuse in schools and must be totally discouraged.
She, therefore, urged the students not to compromise or shy away from reporting any cases of abuse to appropriate government agencies.
