Collaborative Efforts to Support Families After Tragic Bus Crash
A collaborative initiative involving government departments, agencies, and local authorities has been established to provide aid to the families of six students who tragically lost their lives in a bus accident within the Hluhluwe-Mfolozi Game Reserve earlier this week.
KZN Government’s Compassionate Response
Today, on Thursday, August 10, 2023, a delegation comprising representatives from various governmental bodies, led by the KwaNongoma Municipal leadership, convened a meeting with the families of the deceased students and school officials.
This gathering follows a prior visit to the families by the Mayor and Speaker of KwaNongoma, Cllr Mshangane Ndabandaba, and Speaker Cllr Babongile Sithole.
The government has made a commitment to extend continuous assistance to the affected families.
This assistance encompasses several aspects, including logistical support for the identification of the deceased learners, psycho-social services, provision of groceries, funeral arrangements, and the coordination of joint memorial services.
Involvement of Stakeholders
A range of stakeholders has been involved in this endeavor, including the Departments of Transport, Education, and Social Development, alongside the Nongoma Local Municipality and other pertinent social partners.

During the meeting, Mayor Ndabandaba underscored the significance of united efforts among all levels of government during times of tragedy:
“We commend the collective spirit exhibited by all government departments as they collaborate with us at the local government level.
This solidarity will make a significant impact and offer solace to the grieving families.
This is an immense tragedy that demands our collective collaboration.
It is not a matter of politics but rather a moment for all leaders to convey empathy and maturity.
Once again, we extend our deepest condolences,” expressed Ndabandaba.
He further expressed gratitude towards the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka, and the MEC for Education, Mbali Fraser.
Both officials ensured that representatives from their departments have been providing support to the families since the day of the accident.
Details of the Bus Crash
The incident occurred on the R618 route, where the bus overturned due to the driver losing control.
This tragic event resulted in the immediate death of five students from Mchitheki Secondary School, with an additional student succumbing to injuries in the hospital.
Numerous other injured students have been discharged from the hospital, while some are still undergoing medical treatment.
