Two guys from the Free State have been arrested for possessing and selling elephant tusks for R60,000.
The arrest occurred as a result of the Hawks’ serious organized crime investigation team posing as potential buyers of the contraband ivory.
Christopher Singo, a spokesman for the Free State Hawks, stated that members of the Hawks, economic small development, the local criminal record centre, and tourist and environmental affairs swiftly apprehended the perpetrators.
“On January 18, 2023, the Hawks set a trap for the suspects and arranged to purchase the elephant tusks from the suspects,” stated Singo.
“The suspects consented to meet with the police, and during the meeting they displayed two elephant tusks and demanded R60,000.”
