How to Record Videos for YouTube, Vimeo, IGTV from Your PC

If you decide to undertake online or open a blog today, eventually, you can consider recording videos. Whether for YouTube, Vimeo, IGTV, or other platforms and social networks. It’s a great way to communicate with potential customers and improve your reach on social media.

What equipment do you need to record videos?
To start recording videos, you could really start by using the bare minimum of recording equipment you already have:
If you are going to record yourself, you can use your mobile, a digital camera, or an external webcam. The laptop camera is usually of inferior quality and is not recommended.
To record only the desktop, you only need screen recording software. Below I leave you some free programs and applications.
However, everyone recommends that, if you are going to do it for a professional purpose, you make at least a minimum investment in essential equipment to record videos.

The basics to record quality videos to publish online
Decent camera (either a webcam, a good cell phone, or an advanced digital camera)
A good microphone.
Camera to record videos on YouTube
It is clear that you need a camera to record unless you are only going to transmit content from your screen (such as tutorials or video games). Ideally, if you are going to record yourself, it is to have a good camera that allows you to record at least in 1080HD (This is the right size to have a good quality video on a desktop).

You can start with a digital camera or phone of reasonable quality that you already own. However, the difference is also noticeable.
A good microphone for recording videos
To begin with, what everyone tells you that you need to record videos for YouTube or publish online, yes or yes, is a good microphone. Audio is critical if you are going to explain something in your video.
Due to circumstances, I ended up getting together with several, so I can also show you the difference between various models of microphones, and that way, you can see the difference.

How to set up a home studio to record videos
Here I’ll show you the recording “studio” ideas that I have used.
Take advantage of a free wall or with careful decoration
If your house allows it, you can take advantage of a wall as a background. Whether it is a plain wall or with a simple and neat decoration that does not distract from the content of the video.
Use curtains as a background
After thinking about it a lot, since I didn’t have free walls in the flat in Germany, I took advantage of the background curtain. Using a side table allows me to record with my back to the window, leaving a clean white background, or you can change the angle and see a part of the desk.

As a tip: I have noticed that when I have to make recordings only from the webcam, it is easier for me to put only the camera. It is much easier to focus on looking at the target than if I have the whole computer.
It doesn’t take you much to start recording decent videos for YouTube, IGTV, or any other social network.
Use a background film for videos
Obviously, having a background panel or sheet for your videos can improve them a lot. It can also help you if you have a perfect area for videos (because of lighting, for example), but the background is not adequate, as it happens to me now.

In that case, you have to take good care of the lighting to get the best out of it.
A loose cheap background, held even with clips, can make you a mess. You must iron them well and carefully to minimize marks.
In the case of green backgrounds, to change the background or for effects, you must bear in mind that they need good lighting to achieve an optimal result and that you may not get the effect you want.
I have seen that there are people who use rolls of wrapping paper (you should look at it).
What software is needed to record videos?
I want to show you great free screen and video recording software on your computer in this case. And with a company or community behind it that supports it.

The truth is that I have found some interesting free tools to record videos for YouTube, Vimeo, or Instagram.
I leave you two of the free programs to record videos and screenshots that I liked the most and that are the ones that I use.

RecordCast
RecordCast is a complete online application that can be used both to record videos and to edit videos. All will be done quickly online.
It is ideal for recording videos, either from the webcam, from your computer screen, or combining the screen and the webcam. It would be the typical video in which the person explaining appears in the corner of the webcam.
Logitech Capture
This is another program for PC to record videos and screenshots or both. It is much simpler and by far.

The only downside is that it puts a “Logi” mark in one corner. Depending on what you are going to do, it may be affordable. And if you are not very technological, it is still easier than the previous one.
Video editing tools
The ideal would be to be able to say everything in one go, record it and make it look great. And you know it won’t always be that way. You will have moments when you go blank when you are not looking at the camera. You will repeat some shots.
So it is better to edit the videos a bit afterward.

I leave you two free software options to edit videos.
If you have doubts, you can leave them in the comments in case I can help you.
FlexClip Video Editor
FlexClip Video Editor is an excellent option for video editing. It is especially interesting for short videos, such as Reels or TikTok. Or it is also ideal for creating intro and outro videos for our YouTube channels, as it has many pro templates.

To edit longer videos is still okay. And the tool is easy to make cuts in videos. In addition, to upload your own videos, audio, and photos, it provides millions of stock music, video clips, and stock photos for you to choose from.
Inshot
If what you are looking for is how to edit videos on your mobile, the free Inshot application has quite basic functionalities, but it can be helpful if you do not need much. Allows you to cut and add music, stickers, and text.

Start recording videos for Instagram, IGTV, Reels, TikToks, or YouTube now!
I hope you find it practical and encourage you too to record your videos for social networks. And if you do, you can share them in the comments.
