A prominent mommy blogger was criticized online after expressing that her “dream trip” to New Zealand had been postponed due to the country’s catastrophic and fatal flooding.
Britnee Kent, a social media influencer who describes herself as “living a simple island life with my boys,” shared a video over the weekend that left viewers feeling particularly uneasy.
Audience members accused her of being “tone deaf” in response to the clip, which depicted her packing her suitcase after being told she and her family could not fly.
Large portions of New Zealand remain in a state of emergency following severe rain on the North Island, which caused devastating flooding in Auckland and landslides in the Auckland region, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty.
Friday’s tremendous and unusual deluge resulted in the death of four individuals.
Carmel Sepuloni, deputy prime minister, described the murders of four people as “horrific” and the situation as “traumatic.”
“The fact that we’ve lost life is the most horrifying aspect. Clearly, along with every Aucklander and New Zealander, we share our thoughts and sorrow with the family of the deceased,” Sepuloni stated at a press conference.
Following the upload of her video, which has now been taken from her TikTok account, Kent received widespread criticism.
However, portions of the rant have been uploaded by other accounts.
An Australian founder of TikTok commented, “Winner winner chicken dinner for the most American thing I’ve ever seen on this app.”
US influencer Britnee Kent tweeted a video of her packing her luggage after she and her family were told they could not fly, and many deemed her “tone deaf.”
“I assumed it was parody because it’s impossible that you lack so much self-awareness. I assumed it was a joke, but it’s true.”
Viewers agreed that Kent’s posting was inexcusably offensive.
One commenter asked, “How are they literally all so incredibly tone deaf?”
“Like, yeah, queen, people are dying, but they likely didn’t ‘let you in’ because they want to ruin your trip,” added another.
“You’re right, we saw your name on the flight manifest and decided to have an emergency flood because you’re a lady.” Someone else remarked, “So much loss and death to spite someone.”
“What total insensitivity! This fills me with such protective wrath for our cousins on the other side of the pond,” said a second individual.
Many were perplexed by the video’s purpose, asking if it had been published to elicit pity for the family.
Nick Nadowell, a Tiktok user, criticized the mother in a video titled “Winner winner chicken dinner for the most American thing I’ve ever seen on this app.”
Someone said, “Are we supposed to feel sorry for them?”
Others were more empathic towards the family, stating that it was probable they were unaware of the disaster unfolding in New Zealand.
One individual wrote, “To be fair, no one in America is talking about it, so I had no idea until literally right now.”
However, it was expected that tourists would verify the weather at their destination prior to departure.
Someone argued, “I was unaware of the flooding until I saw this video, but if you’re traveling there, you’d think they’d be aware of what’s happening there.”
Some locations in New Zealand got more than 150 mm of precipitation in just three hours.
“I assumed it was parody because it’s impossible that you lack so much self-awareness. Nick Nadowell stated in his video, “I thought it had to be a joke, but it’s not,” indicating that he believed it to be a hoax.
Residents caught footage of the escalating chaos as vehicles were swept away and homes were fully submerged.
Leonardo Puglisi’s Twitter account shared a screenshot of the contentious video with the comment, “hmmm yes, I wonder why planes can’t land in certain parts of New Zealand right now hmmm.”
The tweet elicited a tremendous response from individuals who shared the same.
One guy joked, “But they don’t get their vacation, which is the worst thing happening right now.”
“This thinking really drives me insane. People are passing away, but oh no! The dread.
My holiday,” another added.
