Iran releases football players jailed at an intersex party

Local media stated that Iranian authorities had released six football players who were jailed for attending a mixed-gender party near Tehran.

The media reported on Sunday that the anonymous footballers were detained at a party where they were “in an aberrant state due to excessive alcohol consumption.”

The Young Journalists Club, a news agency affiliated with state television, reported late Sunday, citing an unknown source, that all football players present at the birthday celebration in Damavand have been released.

According to the Fars news agency, officials have initiated the release process for four footballers, two of whom play for Esteghlal FC.

Alcohol consumption by non-Muslims is only permitted for religious purposes under Iranian law. There is a ban against dancing with the other gender.
