The subject of a recent Washington Post story detailing a series of troubling off-court incidents, NBA superstar Ja Morant went viral on social media early Saturday morning when an Instagram Live video surfaced of him appearing to flash a gun at a strip club.
The video shows Morant wearing the diamond pendant that Nike gifted him at the NBA All-Star Game in February. However, it is unclear when the video was taken as Instagram Live videos are deleted when they conclude.
The Washington Post story, published on Wednesday, reported several incidents that Morant has been involved in off the court. One of these incidents, which had previously been covered, involved Morant being accused of repeatedly punching a 17-year-old boy in the head after a dispute in a pickup basketball game at Morant’s house.
Morant claimed self-defence in this incident, stating that the boy had thrown a basketball at his head before he started swinging. The boy told police that Morant had entered his house and later emerged with a gun in his waistband.
The story also reported on an incident in which Morant was accused of threatening the head of security at a mall, as well as an NBA investigation into an alleged incident involving Morant’s associates pointing a red laser at members of the Pacers.
After the story was widely circulated, Morant was criticized for doing a gun celebration in a game against the Rockets. Morant’s agent, Jim Tanner, called the Washington Post report “irresponsible and defamatory.” The NBA stated that its investigation into the alleged incident with the Pacers “could not corroborate that any individual threatened others with a weapon.”
In a recent matchup between the Grizzlies and the Nuggets, Morant had 27 points and 10 assists in a losing effort.
