Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, and Daniel Andrews, the premier of Victoria, had an uneasy reunion but promised to keep in contact.
In 2020 and 2021, when the two leaders gained notoriety for implementing some of the strictest regulations in the world during the Covid epidemic, Ardern said she had maintained regular communication with Andrews.
The two met in Melbourne for the first time since the lockdowns were removed, but at a time when some medical officials are pushing for a return to severe restrictions, the Victorian premier uncomfortably grabbed Ardern’s shoulder and embraced her.
