DALLAS — Friday night, Jack Hughes scored his second goal of the contest 20 seconds into overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Hughes’ game-winning goal deflected off Tyler Seguin’s stick and evaded Jake Oettinger as the Devils overcame a 2-0 deficit to climb to an NHL-best 19-3-2 on the road.
Miles Wood also scored, and Vitek Vanecek made a career-high 33 saves to extend his winning streak to a career-high nine consecutive games.
The Devils, who are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games, split a back-to-back on the road after falling to Nashville 6-4 on Thursday night. Five of the last six games for New Jersey have gone into overtime.
Roope Hintz and Ty Dellandrea scored for the Stars, who have lost their last three games in OT by a score of 3-2.
Jake Oettinger stopped 26 shots for the Stars, who suffered their first three-game losing streak of the season (0-1-2). It’s also the first time since March 2018 that Dallas has played three consecutive games past regulation.
At 10:50 of the first period, Dellandrea scored the game’s first goal by skating toward the left corner, spinning, and lifting the ball into the net. It touched Erik Haula’s right skate while he was backchecking and dribbled past Vanecek into the net.
Hintz’s 20th goal of the season and 100th in his five-year NHL career was scored 5 seconds into a 5-on-3 power play after a Dallas timeout, giving the Stars a 2-0 lead. At 16:44, he fired a one-timer from the right circle after winning a faceoff.
The Devils responded with two goals in the first four minutes of the second period to level the game. 65 seconds into the period, Hughes scored on a breakaway by completing a two-line outlet pass. Wood also scored on a transition following a line change by Dallas.
Wood broke a goalless streak of 19 games. In his last 34 games, he has scored only twice versus Dallas.
Dougie Hamilton assisted on both goals scored by Hughes. This season, Hughes has scored 33 goals, including 26 in his last 30 outings.
