Since 1997, fans have had a few things to say about the door that finally led to Jack’s death in “Titanic.”
James Cameron addresses the controversial claim that Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jack could have lived by clinging to Rose’s door in the icy seas.
Cameron stated in the forthcoming National Geographic documentary “Titanic: 25 Years Later” that Jack and Rose (played by Kate Winslet) were never clutching onto a door.
“A new investigation will settle this fan-based question about Jack and Rose and a piece of floating debris that everyone calls a door,” Cameron told the Television Critics Association on Friday, as reported by USA Today.
“Technically, it’s not a door,” he explained, adding, “it’s a piece of the first-class cabin’s wood paneling.”
In the next documentary, which will be released on February 5, the director says he will “conduct a forensic investigation” of the much-discussed fan idea.
The performance will scientifically reproduce what Jack and Rose faced when the Titanic sank in the icy seas of the Atlantic Ocean. The stunt doubles of DiCaprio and Winslet were chosen based on their physique similarities.
According to a Twitter teaser for the documentary, the stunt doubles were in 56-degree water instead of 28-degree water, thus they “doubled the time for every stage” of the reconstruction, according to Cameron.
Cameron stated that, according to the algorithms, this method of evaluating the hypothesis yields accurate results. “We weren’t attempting to prove or disprove anything; we just wanted to know, ‘If you do this, does it improve it?’”
He said, without disclosing the results, “Over the course of four tests, we came to fairly definitive conclusions.”
Cameron will release a remastered version of “Titanic” in theaters in time for Valentine’s Day.
In December, Winslet addressed if she thinks Jack could have survived the door incident.
Winslet remarked during her visit on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, “I don’t f—ing know.” “That’s the answer: I don’t know for sure.”
Winslet was shown a clip of her “Titanic” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio being asked the same question during an earlier podcast interview.
“I have no comment,” quipped Leonardo DiCaprio as actress Margot Robbie concurred that the door scandal is “the biggest controversy.”
Winslet, after pondering the answer, stated, “I actually don’t think we would have survived if we had both entered through that door.” “I believe he could have fit, but the structure would have tipped, and it would not have been a viable plan.”
