On Thursday, Atlanta police reported that Jatonne Sterling, a college baseball player, was fatally shot after an argument with a friend led to a gunfight inside a parked car.
Sterling, a student at Clark Atlanta University, was found dead around 1:40 p.m. outside a church on another university’s campus, about a mile from his school.
His alleged killer, Keontay Holliman-Peoples, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and other charges.
The motive for the slaying is unknown, but police believe Sterling and Holliman-Peoples were arguing inside a car before the fatal shooting occurred.
Atlanta police deputy chief Charles Hampton Jr. reported that Sterling climbed into a parked car inside a Catholic centre lot, where an argument ensued, then escalated into gunfire.
Holliman-Peoples was also injured in the gunfight, but it’s unclear whether Sterling was the one who shot him. Police are looking for a third person in the car at the time of the murder.
According to Hampton, Sterling and Holliman-Peoples had known one another and exchanged “correspondence” before the shooting.
Although not a student at Clark Atlanta University, Holliman-Peoples has a criminal record spanning two states.
CAU students held a vigil in honour of Sterling, a standout baseball team player and remembered as a talented athlete. Sterling was a 20-year-old sophomore and a Chicago native.
