Jeremiah Green, drummer and co-founder of Modest Mouse, passed away on Saturday after a battle with cancer.
He has 45 years of age.
According to a band statement, Green had fallen asleep and never awoke.
The band posted on Facebook, “There is no way to ease into this: Today we lost our great friend Jeremiah.” “He sat down to rest and quietly passed away”
“I wish I could say a lot of beautiful things right now, but the time is not perfect. These will arrive later and from numerous sources. Please value the affection you give, get, have given, and will receive. Jeremiah was foremost about love. We love you.”
His mother Carol Namatame disclosed on Christmas Day that Green was just diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
Namatame wrote on Facebook, “It is with a heavy heart that the Green and Namatame families announce the demise of their husband, father, son, and brother, Jeremiah Green.”
“Jeremiah was a beacon for many. At present, the family requests seclusion. More details, including a Celebration of Life for friends and admirers, will be forthcoming in the coming months. The family of Jeremiah would like to thank everyone for their continuing support and best wishes.”
In 1992, Green co-founded Modest Mouse with lead singer Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy.
The most recent of Green’s two unique spells with the band began in May of 2004.
He was a member of Modest Mouse until 2003, when he decided to quit. In 2004, Green returned to his bandmates after a brief one-year absence.
Following the news of his passing, tributes from the whole music community poured in, including a couple from former members of Modest Mouse.
“The illustrious Jeremiah Green. My best friend, bandmate, and the most innovative musician I’ve ever encountered,” tweeted Johnny Marr, founder of The Smiths and former guitarist for Modest Mouse.
“Rest In Peace, Jeremiah,” remarked drummer Patrick Carney of the Black Keys.
“JG. I love you. Always. Forever.” Jim Fairchild, a former guitarist for Modest Mouse, commented on the band’s Instagram post
The drummer from Hawaii had previously played with Satisfact, Red Stars Theory, and Peeved.
Green is survived by his wife Lauren and son Wilder.
