With a new host, the Golden Globes are back and better than ever. Variety reports that Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the awards ceremony in January.
Helen Hoehne, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, praised Carmichael’s “comedic talents,” which she said “have amused and pleased audiences while giving thought-provoking moments that are so crucial to the times we live in,” per Variety.
Hoehne remarked, “Jerrod is the unique talent this show requires to launch the awards season.”
Although Carmichael has never hosted an award show before, he is fairly familiar with NBC, the network that broadcasts the Golden Globe Awards, having been nominated for an Emmy in April for hosting Saturday Night Live. He was also the creator, writer, and director of The Carmichael Show, which aired from 2015 to 2017 on the network. Carmichael most recently won an Emmy for his comedy show Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.
The Golden Globes are returning to television after a one-year absence. The show was canceled by NBC following a Los Angeles Times investigation alleging racism and sexual harassment inside the HFPA. As a result, the award show remained as a “private event,” with award winners such as Andrew Garfield and Nicole Kidman receiving no TV coverage.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will return to television this year “as part of a one-year arrangement that allows the HFPA and [producer] Dick Clark Productions to explore new prospects for domestic and global distribution across a variety of channels in the future.”
Even without the airing of the Golden Globes, this year has been a busy one for award events. From the “slap heard ’round the world’ at the Oscars to Jimmy Kimmel dozing on stage at the Emmys, the prizes have never been the centerpiece of the presentations. Could the Golden Globes’ comeback alter this? We’ll have to wait and watch what transpires when Carmichael performs at the award event on January 10, 2023.
