The South Sydney Rabbitohs are considering formally pursuing a matter with NSW Police after player Keaon Koloamatangi and several teammates heard a young fan racially abuse Latrell Mitchell during a match against the Panthers.
The Herald reported that the 15-year-old fan denied racially abusing Mitchell when interviewed by police.
However, Koloamatangi, who was standing behind Mitchell at the time, confirms that multiple people heard the same thing.
TV footage of the incident showed Koloamatangi and Cody Walker trying to identify the culprit before turning around in disgust. Souths prop Tom Burgess also heard the same words.
The NRL Integrity Unit is continuing its investigation, but police can only take the matter further if Souths lodges a formal complaint.
Two years ago, Mitchell went to the police after he was exposed to shocking abuse online.
Two men were later charged with ‘use carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence’.
Mitchell has always been open about calling out racism, something he has faced his entire life.
Dally M winner, Cronulla and Indigenous All Stars playmaker Nicho Hynes, supports Mitchell, saying he loves what he does for the sport and that he’s changing the lives of many people.
Hynes also hopes that this incident will make people think twice about what they say.
