Bryan Kohberger is facing the possibility of being executed by firing squad if found guilty of murdering four college students in Idaho.
The criminal-justice doctoral student is accused of stabbing the University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle on November 13th.
Although prosecutors have not yet stated if they will seek the death penalty, state lawmaker Rep. Bruce Skaug has introduced a bill to bring back the firing squad as a form of execution in Idaho, claiming they are more humane and cannot be botched.
Lethal injection is currently standard in Idaho, but chemical shortages have resulted in the cancellation of scheduled executions.
Kohberger’s friends remember him as a one-time obese, heroin-addicted bully who had wanted to be a police officer but later became obsessed with his weight, developing an eating disorder that left him hospitalized.
Despite this, they never suspected he would be accused of such a heinous crime.
Kohberger is facing four counts of murder and is expected to enter a plea on June 26th.
Prosecutors have until the end of July to announce whether or not they will seek the death penalty.
The suspect allegedly stalked his victims for several weeks before the murders, and various DNA evidence has linked him to the crime scene.
The murders have caused shock and dismay, and the families and friends of the victims have set up a makeshift memorial outside the house where the four students were killed.
The tragic event highlights the ongoing debate about the death penalty, and the reintroduction of the firing squad in Idaho has reignited the conversation.
