Labour peer wins compensation

A Labour peer, Baron Richard Rosser, has received a compensation payout of £22,500 after falling over a plank of wood outside a vape shop owner’s house in September 2017.

The 78-year-old sustained injuries to his face, knees, wrist and hands, as well as losing two teeth. He had left parliament and was walking home from the House of Lords when the incident occurred.

Mr Tanvir, the owner of the vape shop, and Mr Patel, the builder responsible for renovating the property, were sued by Baron Rosser, with both accepting that he was due compensation.

During the trial, Recorder Robert Glancy KC found that it was Mr Patel who was at fault for leaving the plank in a dangerous position.

The judge ordered Mr Patel to pay the compensation payout, stating that Baron Rosser was entirely blameless for the accident.

Baron Rosser is a former Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association (TSSA) trade union leader and Labour politician.

He was made a life peer on his retirement by Tony Blair in 2004 as Baron Rosser, of Ickenham in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

He is currently the Shadow Spokesperson for Transport and Home Affairs for Labour in the House of Lords.

The incident occurred as Baron Rosser was walking along Swakeleys Drive, carrying his briefcase and a bag of papers.

As he was walking, his foot struck a plank of wood, causing him to fall forwards over the board and onto the pavement.

The following morning, he retraced his steps early to take photographs of the scene of his fall, where he found two of his teeth on the pavement.
