The administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has commenced the fit-for-purpose educational system in Lagos State with the establishment of a Comprehensive School System in 12 Senior Secondary Schools across the State.
Speaking on the commencement of the programme, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, revealed that the pilot programme, which commenced in 12 schools across the Six Education Districts and with 30 students per classroom, has a robust curriculum design that has been developed to manage the students from beginners’ stage to mastery level.
Mrs. Adefisayo emphasised that the first set of students for the comprehensive programme will get a mobile tablet preloaded with the curriculum and courses relating to the skills they wish to acquire.
According to her, “The government is investing in the programme to give the students an edge by providing a fit-for-purpose and quality education. The initiative is expected to reduce the number of school dropouts due to their inability to cope with academic work”.
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, declared that the introduction of the comprehensive programme is an initiative of government to inculcate skill acquisition in learning and empowering the students with various entrepreneurial courses, adding that the initiative will enable them to become independent and productive in the future.
Abolaji urged students on the pilot programme to maximise the opportunities and huge investments committed by the government into the programme and consider their involvement as a step to greater exploits and achievements.
The Lagos State Comprehensive School is a secondary education institution that teaches an inclusive range of subjects across the academic and vocational spectrum. The most significant attribute of the Comprehensive Schools is that the students are not selected based on academic aptitude but vocation and skill interests.
The Lagos State Government is desirous of empowering students with the requisite skills for a self-reliant future by providing a suitable path for them based on their skill competence. The School Programme has broad subject categories which include skills training in Agriculture, Tech & Digital Skills, Beauty & Events, Building & Construction, Media & Entertainment, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, Communication, Marketing & Sales as well as Digital Literacy among others.
