‘Life and Times of Michael K’ set to premiere at the Baxter Theatre [photos]

The Life & Times of Michael K will be on at the Baxter Theatre from Monday 28 February to Wednesday 16 March at 19:00. There will be 14:00 shows on Saturday on 5, 12 and 19 March.

The 1983 novel written by South African-born Nobel peace prize winner JM Coetzee titled Life and Times of Michael K has been adapted by local playwright Lara Foot for the stage.
The play is set to premiere at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on Monday 28 February and will run until 19 March.
The highly-anticipated staging of Life and Times of Michael K is a co-production between the Baxter Theatre and a Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus, a theatre company in Germany.
The story follows Michael K, a man who goes on a journey through South Africa, to take his mother to die where she was born. Through the story, Michael finds strength in his own humanity, his connection with the earth and his unique path.
Written and directed by South African playwright Lara Foot, Life and Times of Michael K has been in the works for more than two years. The play also marks the first time Foot works with Tony-winning puppet designers Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler.
The production was set to debut at the Theater der Welt festival in Germany in June 2019, but the festival was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The world premiere of Life and Times of Michael K was live-streamed from the Baxter Theatre to Dusseldorf, Germany in June 2021. In November, the company travelled to Germany to perform it for the first time and received raving reviews.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a newspaper in Germany praised Lara Foot for building “impressive images together with her puppet ensemble”.
The cast for the play features theatre legends, Sandra Prinsloo, Andrew Buckland, Faniswa Yisa, puppet master Craig Leo and actors Roshina Ratnam, Carlo Daniels, Marty Kintu, Billy Langa and Nolufefe Ntshuntshe.
