‘Mama Joy’, who was previously an Orlando Pirates “super fan” before switching her allegiance to Shauwn ‘MaMkhize’ Mkhize’s Royal AM prior to the start of the season, was booed by the Buccaneers’ supporters in attendance as they called her a “liar” in a song.
This despite being an avid Orlando Pirates fan for decades, so much so, that she reportedly only missed one home match for the Soweto giants in 20 years.
At the time of her defection from Orlando Pirates to Royal AM, ‘Mama Joy’ said, as reported by The South African website: “I decided to join Royal AM for me to support MaMkhize. You know MaMkhize, you remember the last time when she was in GladAfrica Championship and she wanted to come to the PSL… On the last day, they said, ‘no, Sekhukhune have qualified and you are going to the playoffs’.
“It was hard for me as a woman to see another woman suffer because you can see how she does things..
“MaMkhize loves football. It pained me to see her being hurt like that. At the end of the day, she managed to buy Bloemfontein Celtic.
“And I was surprised, and I said to myself, ‘MaMkhize really wanted to play in the PSL’, and she did exactly that,” Mama Joy added.
Mama Joy’s homecoming was not a happy one
However, her return to Orlando Stadium last week for the goalless match wasn’t a memorable homecoming.
“I was shocked when I went to the Pirates game and I got booed by fellow supporters. It was the first time that I have experienced this, to be that person who gets booed. Normally, what happens is that supporters will boo players, but me, I don’t know what I have done to be booed by Pirates supporters,” said a distraught Mama Joy, according to the Citizen.
“I am still shocked and I don’t know what to say. But what they have done is not acceptable. They have to respect me and understand that I have chosen Royal AM. And I always go to the stadium because since we are faced with this virus (Covid-19), when you have been vaccinated you can attend any game you want.
“I never thought going to Orlando Stadium would end up with me getting booed, but I just joined them when they sang Mama Joy o le menemene (Mama-Joy you’re a liar). I was there to sing and dance with supporters. I attended the Mamelodi Sundowns game when they were playing the Caf game and I didn’t get booed. But after the game, they came to me and took pictures with me and I didn’t say no. And some were saying they love me and they want me to come back (to Pirates), but I am a Royal AM supporter now,” Mama Joy added.
Mama Joy said that Orlando Pirates fans need to accept that she is now a Twihli Thwahla supporter and they have to respect her as a fellow football fan.
Both Royal AM and Orlando Pirates are still battling for a CAF spot next season.
Royal AM are currently in second place in the standings with 45 points while Orlando Pirates are fourth with 40, both having played 26 matches.
