Matt Pobereyko, who pitched in the Mets system in 2017 and 2018, passed away over the weekend at the age of 31 due to a heart attack, according to MLB insider Hector Gomez. Pobereyko, a right-handed reliever, had undergone Tommy John surgery earlier in his career and had pitched in Single-A Columbia in 2017.
In 2018, he worked in the bullpen at Single-A St. Lucie, Double-A Binghamton, and Triple-A Las Vegas. Pobereyko had also played in the Marlins and Diamondbacks organizations and was pitching in Mexico at the time of his death.
The Sioux City Explorers, an independent league team, tweeted their condolences, saying, “We mourn the loss of Matt Pobereyko. A great baseball player and an even better person. RIP, Pobo.”
The St. Paul Saints, another independent team, also tweeted their sympathies, describing Pobereyko as “an incredible teammate and fierce competitor, but an even nicer person.” Pobereyko’s final season in college, at Kentucky Wesleyan College, saw him go 9-2 with a 1.96 ERA in 12 games.
The school tweeted its sadness, saying, “The entire Kentucky Wesleyan community mourns the loss of former baseball player Matt Pobereyko.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends now.”
In 2018, Pobereyko told Metsminors.net that his parents were a great source of support throughout his career. “Any time there has been a low over this crazy path of a career they have been there to help me get back up,” he had said.
