After 30 years on the lam, Italy’s most wanted man, convicted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, was finally apprehended on Monday in a private clinic in Palermo, Sicily, according to paramilitary police.
According to Carabinieri Gen. Pasquale Angelosanto, commander of the police force’s special operations unit, Messina Denaro was apprehended at the clinic where he was receiving treatment for an unidentified medical issue.
Following the arrest, Messina Denaro was brought by police to a hidden location, according to Italian state television.
He was a young man when he fled, and he is now 60. Even when on the run, Messina Denaro was regarded as the leading Cosa Nostra official in Sicily. He established a base of operations in the western Sicilian port city of Trapani.
He was the last of three top-level Mafia bosses who had evaded capture for years.
