Council planners rejected Jamie Redknapp’s application to expand the gym at his £4 million Surrey property, which would have included a dressing room.
The Sky Sports analyst had already been granted permission to construct a single-story back expansion, a part two and part single-story front and side extensions, and a part two and part single-storey extension for the gym.
The 49-year-old former England and Liverpool player then adopted a new strategy, extending out from the back like sworn enemies Manchester United, and filed plans for a part two- and part one-storey rear expansion.
However, authorities from the local council declared the planned construction “off-side,” claiming it was “poorly designed” and would give the front of the property a “unpleasant” aspect.
According to the Elmbridge Council, “the project would result in a kind of development that would look uncomfortable in its design and size, resulting in considerable impairment to the visual amenity and character of the site.”
Redknapp already has a magnificent entry hall, breakfast room, TV room, office, swimming pool, and AstroTurf lawn in his luxurious six-bedroom home.
Additionally, it has a stunning home theater room.
However, he planned to build a home workout room with a changing space behind his garage wing as a change of configuration.
The former athlete’s planning agent said in a design statement that the additions would be “subservient” to the primary home and have no negative effects on the neighbors.
If the designs had been accepted, he would have had a gross interior space of 874 square meters as opposed to the current 699 square meters.
Despite the fact that no neighbors on the private road close objected, council authorities rejected the amended plan.
‘The project varies from the prior application in that it keeps the constructed form of the garage, while the previous scheme rebuilt this, and also expands to a larger degree at first floor level,’ said planning officer Paige Irving.
“The new plan extends at first floor level beyond the existing main rear constructed form of the residence to a far larger degree than the prior scheme did.”
Given the location, size, and pitched roofs of the front dormer windows, which would seem out of place on the existing garage, the plan would not reference the front of the remainder of the building in terms of design.
It would be seen from the front elevation and street scene, giving the front elevation a less than appealing look.
It is unknown at this time if Mr. Redknapp would carry out the first plans that were granted since he has three months to file an appeal against the council’s decision.
The former player, his new wife Frida, and their combined children reside at the Surrey house. After being married, the couple had Raphael as their first child in 2021.
In contrast to Mr. Redknapp, who is the father of boys Charley, 18, and Beau, 14, with his ex-wife Louise, Frida has four children from her marriage to hedge fund mogul Jonathan Lourie.
Following the divorce with Louise in January 2018, he moved into the house. The previous year, the two had broken up.
