NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Germany on Thursday (1 December 2022) for its “significant contributions to our Alliance,” emphasizing that German leadership “is more crucial than ever as we face the gravest security situation in decades.”
The Secretary General is in Berlin following the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Bucharest, where Allies pledged to maintain their support for Ukraine and to continue to strengthen NATO’s own deterrence and defense. Mr. Stoltenberg thanked Germany for its unwavering support of Ukraine and for playing a “crucial role” in bolstering Allied defenses, including through its historic decision to significantly increase defense spending. He emphasized that a strong and prepared Bundeswehr, with cutting-edge capabilities in all domains, and a robust defense industry are essential for Germany’s, Europe’s, and the world’s security.
The Secretary General was speaking at the Berlin Security Conference organized this year by the Behorden Spiegel in partnership with Norway. The conference was attended by the Danish, Finnish, German, and Norwegian Ministers of Defence, as well as the German Chancellor and the Norwegian Prime Minister.
