Long-Running Feud:
An ongoing argument between neighbours reached a breaking point when Tony Glaister, 51, poured a bottle containing water mixed with vegetable oil over his neighbour’s car.
The feud had been simmering for months before the incident occurred in November of the previous year.
Court Proceedings:
Tony Glaister recently appeared in Newcastle Magistrates’ Court, facing an allegation of criminal damage.
Glaister, who had no previous trouble with the law since 2008, pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court heard that the act of vandalism resulted in professional cleaning costs amounting to £210 for the victim’s car.
Prosecutor’s Statement:
According to prosecutor Rob Lawson, the offence took place on November 25 in Prudhoe, on School Row. An oil-like substance was splashed onto the complainant’s vehicle.
The victim’s statement revealed that the car had to be taken to a repair shop, where it underwent machine polishing to remove the substance, incurring the £210 cleaning expense.
Mitigation and Apologies:
During the proceedings, Adrian Ions, representing Glaister, explained that his client had reached his “wits’ end” due to the ongoing feud with the victim.
Glaister extended his apologies to both the victim and the court.
Mr. Ions added that Glaister had anticipated causing minor inconvenience to the witness, assuming they would merely need to wipe off the substance with a rag.
Judicial Decision and Reflection:
District Judge Paul Currer ordered Glaister to pay £100 in compensation to the victim.
Judge Currer acknowledged the distressing nature of neighbourhood disputes, which can escalate and consume lives, often becoming an obsession.
Considering Glaister’s actions to be out of character, Judge Currer described the incident as exceptionally foolish.
Conclusion:
The case highlights the consequences of an ongoing dispute between neighbours, as Tony Glaister faced the legal repercussions of his act of vandalism.
The incident serves as a reminder of the impact such feuds can have on individuals’ lives and the importance of finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
