On Wednesday, the New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 8-4 in a spring training game.
While the game provided an opportunity for the Mets to showcase their talent, it also highlighted some weaknesses.
One area of concern was third baseman Brett Baty’s defence.
Baty made a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth inning, which raised questions about his readiness to play at the major league level.
However, Baty quickly redeemed himself by making a strong throw to secure out just two batters later.
Despite the error, manager Buck Showalter remains optimistic about Baty’s potential and his ability to play third base.
Luis Guillorme started the game at third base, while Eduardo Escobar is the incumbent in the position.
Baty, who is considered the organization’s second-best prospect behind Francisco Alvarez, is expected to be assigned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Alvarez, who served as the designated hitter during Wednesday’s game, may catch for the first time this spring by Friday.
Alvarez is returning from offseason ankle surgery, and the Mets are being cautious with his rehabilitation.
During the game, right-hander Tylor Megill pitched for the Mets and was pleased with the results of his two-inning outing.
Megill worked on his curveball in the offseason and was able to throw it for strikes during the game.
Megill will likely serve as rotation depth and pitch for Triple-A Syracuse until he’s needed in the majors.
The use of the curveball can complement Megill’s fastball and provide him with a two-strike pitch.
Tommy Hunter threw a simulated game in Port St. Lucie, where he faced Starling Marte, who is recovering from core muscle surgery.
Showalter said Marte’s rehab is progressing on schedule, but he declined to provide a timeline for when Marte might be ready to play in a game.
Meanwhile, Darin Ruf, who received a cortisone shot in his right wrist, could make his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday.
Non-roster invitee Grant Hartwig tossed a scoreless inning for the Mets.
Hartwig was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021 and has impressed the Mets coaching staff with his performance.
He has a good arm, and the coaching staff believes he could make an impact at some point.
Zach Greene, who was selected from the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft, has also been impressive in spring training.
Showalter noted the velocity and late life of Greene’s fastball, which has played well against opposing hitters.
The coaching staff will continue to evaluate Greene as the hitters get more tuned in.
Stephen Ridings, a former Yankees right-hander who battled injuries last season, has also caught Showalter’s attention.
Showalter believes that if Ridings can stay healthy, he could help the Mets.
Showalter described Ridings’ pitching as having “big stuff,” and the Mets are looking at the same things the Yankees tried to unlock.
The Mets-Cardinals game on Monday was the most-watched MLB spring training broadcast on ESPN in seven years. The game averaged an audience of 423,000 viewers.
